Description: Ash elevator made by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Ohio in use at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, 1916. When in use, the elevator's telescopic action extended it above street level. Coal ash was carried up from an ash pit by way of a continuous bucket elevator to a truck for disposal. Description: Photograph of WWII turret gunner Ray Cabel. Cabel was the gunner on the B-17 that was shot down over France with C. Walder Parke on board. Charles Walder Parke was born on July 28, 1924, and grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces in 1942 intending to be a pilot during WWII, but spent most of his military career as a navigator on B-17 Flying Fortresses in the 94th Bombardment Group. Parke earned two Bronze Stars, an Air Medal with several Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his successful bombing missions, including some over Berlin. He is best known for being on board a B-17 which was shot down over France by German planes on June 25, 1944, during a non-combat mission. The crew managed to make an emergency landing, and everyone inside survived. After the war, Parke founded the Cleveland-based Laurel Industries Inc., which became a prominent supplier of antimony oxide to the plastics industry. He died of Lou-Gehrig’s Disease on September 15, 1996, at the age of 72. View on Ohio Memory.

Mitchel was born on August 28, 1809 or 1810, in Union County, Kentucky, and grew up in Lebanon, Ohio. He was influential in establishing an observatory for Cincinnati College in the 1850s. During the early part of the Civil War, he commanded the Department of the Ohio and rose to the rank of major general. On October 20, 1862, he died of yellow fever in South Carolina, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photographs of Herbert "Herb" Jeffries with Yvonne Walker-Taylor and a woman named Rosie. This is one of several pages taken from a scrapbook that belonged to Yvonne Walker-Taylor. Herbert Jeffrey, aka Herb Jefferies, the first African American singing cowboy. His first film was "Harlem on the Prairie" which was considered the first black western following the inauguration of the talkies. Herbert Jefferies sang his own songs in "The Bronze Buckaroo" and "Harlem Rides the Range." Following his movie career, Jefferies returned to singing and recorded "The Flamingo" with Duke Ellington. Walker-Taylor was the daughter of Bishop Dougal Ormonde Beaconfield Walker, the 66th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and president of Wilberforce University in the 1940s. Walker-Taylor later went on to follow in his footsteps, and became one of the first female African American college president in the United States when she was named president of Wilberforce in 1984. Description: Description reads: "CLOVERNOOK. Home of Alice and Phoebe Cary, Near Cincinnati, Hamilton Co. O. Now a school for blind." Clovernook, Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired is located at 7000 Hamilton Ave in Cincinnati, Ohio. Clovernook was a 27 acre farm about 10 miles north of Cincinnati in what is now North College Hill. Alice was born on 26 April 1820 and Pheobe was born 24 Sep 1824. Both of the girls were poets and in 1850 moved to New York City. Alice died in 1871 of tuberculosis, and Phoebe followed her in death five months later of hepatitis. They were buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. In 1903, Clovernook became a residences for blind women. It is now a multi-faceted organization service the blind and visually impaired. Description: Joshua W. Sill (1831-1862), a native of Chillicothe, was killed at the Battle of Stone's River outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Despite his gentle personality, Sill excelled at West Point where he graduated third in his class. He remained in the army until 1861, where he spent most of his time teaching at West Point. He resigned in 1861 and accepted a position teaching mathematics at the Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, New York. Sill resigned this position at the outbreak of the Civil War and returned to Ohio where he was commissioned as a lieutenant colonel. He served as aide to General George B. McClellan. Early in the war, Sill fought in minor battles in Kentucky and Alabama. In July 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general and was later given command of a brigade in General Phil Sheridan's army. He was killed by rifle fire while leading his men into battle on December 31, 1862. This photograph was probably taken during the summer of 1861 while Sill was in Portsmouth recruiting troops for the 33rd O. V. I. It measures 2 by 4 inches (5.08 by 10.16 cm). View on Ohio Memory.
